Just Another Day in the Canyon
Here’s another view from my recent trip to Big Bend National Park, taken from the same canyon—Santa Elena Canyon—as the view I posted a couple of days ago. That is the Rio Grande whose water you see in the canyon. Not the raging river it was once noted to be.
This is a mix of monochromatic and full-color treatments of the same image. I did the initial work on each in Lightroom and combined them using layer masks in Photoshop Elements, only allowing subtle color to emerge in specific places—like the rock in the foreground and those of the distant canyon wall. I thought that the subtle but relatively inharmonious colors of the original detracted a little from the atmosphere of the overall canyon, so I wanted to mute out some of those distracting elements. However, not having any color at all didn’t seem to hit the right note, either. So I decided to combine them together. What do you think?
