Someone’s Knocking–Will You Answer?

Woodpecker

You hear his knock first, but instead of opening a door, you crane your neck and search the heights of a tree trunk. And it’s there you find your caller: the woodpecker.

In this case, it was a male ladder-backed woodpecker. He was searching for a meal in the trees beside our campsite during a camping trip this past fall. We heard him before we saw him, and I reached for my camera before I confirmed what I already suspected: that a woodpecker was in our midst.

He certainly wasn’t shy, and I was able to capture him foraging for a number of minutes before he flew off to “greener” pastures. He even posed for me, as you can see.

As usual, initial editing done in Lightroom with some touches added in Photoshop Elements.
